KILLA SALLY PULLS OFF UPSET, WINNING OKLAHOMA CLASSICS DISTAFF TURF AT REMINGTON PARK
OKLAHOMA CITY – Killa Sally finally got the clean trip she had been begging for the whole meet and she took every advantage, winning the $99,600 Oklahoma Classics Distaff Turf at 10-1 odds.
“We had some bad luck her first time out (here),” said trainer Justin Evans. “Then we had a troubled trip the next time, but tonight she showed up with the clean trip and showed what she can do.”
What she can do helped Evans do what he hasn’t done before – win a stakes race at Remington Park and win an Oklahoma Classics race. This is the first year that Evans has brought a string of horses to run full-time at this Oklahoma City track.
It was jockey David Cabrera’s third win on the night and his first trip to the winner’s circle in the Distaff Turf series. It improved Cabrera’s impressive Classics wins total to 13, just one behind Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame rider Tim Doocy (14) for fifth place. Cliff Berry, the all-time winningest jockey in Remington Park history, holds the record for most Oklahoma Classics victories with 26.
“Honestly, I was very comfortable where I had her positioned; just the way I wanted,” Cabrera said. “We turned for home and everything was just perfect.”
Killa Sally came from dead last in the field of seven Oklahoma-bred fillies and mares to pass them all by the time she hit the finish line in the 1-1/16th miles race over the yielding turf course. Floras Ora (9-2) set a lively pace early, setting it up for Killa Sally’s late charge to the wire before the former faded to last place. Killa Sally won by a half-length, out-dueling 4-5 favorite Talkin Cadee to the finish.
Killa Sally, a 3-year-old daughter of Volatile, out of the Flower Alley mare Sallyport, paid $23.20 to win, $5.80 to place and $3 to show.
The winner earned $59,760 for owner David A. Bernsen and Shamrock Stables of Las Vegas and improved to 12 starts, three wins, four seconds and two thirds for a lifetime total of $173,445. Killa Sally was bred by Matthew Cody McCart and David Matthew Wilkett and was purchased for $45,000 from the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale of 2024.
Running time for Killa Sally was 1:45.02 over the yielding turf course. She took advantage of early fractions of :23.78 for the first quarter-mile, :47.92 for the half-mile, 1:12.68 for three-quarters of a mile and 1:38.65 for the mile.
Talkin Cadee was one length ahead of third-place finisher Doudoudouwanadance (5-2). The rest of the order of finish past the top three was Inca Code (24-1) fourth, Gospel Clarity (17-1) fifth, Code of the South (12-1) sixth and Floras Ora seventh. Cryptic Miss and Maybe Dolcie were both scratched from the race.
Remington Park racing continues Saturday, Oct. 16 with the first post at 6:30pm-Central.
